and Thamūd who hollowed hewed the rocks sakhr is the plural of sakhra in the valley the Wādī al-Qurā rocks which they used as dwellings

وَثَمُودَ الَّذِينَ جَابُوا الصَّخْرَ بِالْوَادِ
And with Thamud who carved rocks in the valley;
