(Had it not been that favour) mercy (from his Lord had reached him he surely had been cast into the wilderness while he was reprobate) and guilty.

لَوْلَا أَنْ تَدَارَكَهُ نِعْمَةٌ مِنْ رَبِّهِ لَنُبِذَ بِالْعَرَاءِ وَهُوَ مَذْمُومٌ
Had it not been for a favour from his Lord he would have been cast blame-worthy on a barren plain.
